NO BAKE CHOCOLATE OATMEAL BARS

3 tbsp vegetable shortening                   2 cups minature marshmallows

¼ cup honey                                        ½ cup peanut butter

¼ cup rolled oats                                  1 cup semi-sweet chocolate bits

½ cup evaporated milk

Grease 9 inch square pan.

In saucepan, combine all ingredients except oats.  Stir until smooth. Blend in oats. Spread evenly in baking pan.

Chill 3 hours or more. Cut into bars and wrap in wax paper.

For thinner bars, use a larger pan.

Comment:

    These are great.  You don't even have to turn on the oven, and when people put the first one in their mouth the pleasure spreads across their face as the taste sensation hits them.

    We had this as part of the dessert table after a holiday meal (Karen's from an Italian family, and there are always a lot of desserts on the table at big occasions.)  Like any chocolate dish, this one requires a rich wine that will stand up to the sweetness.  We are thinking about a port from Alba Vineyard in New Jersey the next time we serve it.  Or perhaps, since this is February and Valentine's Day is just around the corner, the Strawberry Wine from Baldwin Vineyards in New York, which you'll find as the February Wine of the Month.  A little libation with these chocolate bars, sitting in front of the fireplace, just might drive the Winter away.
