Wine of the Month Millbrook Vineyards & Winery 2002 Pinot Noir Proprietor's Special Reserve
Millbrook Vineyards & Winery
800-662-9463 Winemaker: John Graziano
Comment:
The Hudson Valley is not known for Pinot Noir, but Millbrook makes one worth finding. Good burgundy color and the style of a French Burgundy make this an ideal complement for grilled chicken, tuna, or veal.
This example shows a winemaker coaxing unexpected quality from the fruit of the region, part of a small but surprising group of wineries halfway between New York City and Albany along the Hudson. The winery is also a great place to visit, not far from West Point and the estates in Hyde Park. With a knowledgeable staff, a well-presented tour, good wine, and a picturesque setting, it is the perfect stop on a daytrip into the Hudson Valley.
Millbrook is the creation of John S. Dyson, the former New York State Commissioner of Commerce and Agriculture. In 1979 he purchased a dairy farm near his home in the Hudson Valley, and by 1985 his winery was born. John Graziano was brought in at the beginning, and is the only winemaker Millbrook has known. Together they have built a fine winery with a well-earned reputation for excellence.
