Wine of the Month Murphy-Goode Estate Winery 2003 Liar's Dice Zinfandel
Murphy-Goode Estate Winery 4001 Highway 128
Geyserville, CA 95441
Winemaker: David Ready Jr.
Comment: This wine is the product of many years of talk between Tim Murphy and the growers he met for breakfast at Mickey's Grill, where they played "liar's dice" as they talked of grapes and weather and wine. With the driving debate and thought coming from the vineyard end, you would expect a wine that emphasized the qualities of the Zinfandel itself, and that is what the winery brings to us in the bottle.
Murphy-Goode was founded by two successful vineyard growers (Tim Murphy, Dale Goode) who partnered with Dave Ready, a marketing man. Despite two decades of success and growth, the three families that started the business (the Murphys, the Goodes, and the Readys) are all still in the business and pushing forward together.
This is a red wine for meat and game. Just great for the last days of Winter, and eager for the barbecues of Summer. Good color, with a moderate body, with the Zinfandel fruit following trough to the finish.
Aging: 16 months in small oak barrels (50% American and 50% French oak) with 35% of the barrels new.
Grapes from Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, CA
