Wine of the Month Lambert's Vintage Wines Chancellor 190
Vineyard Road 304-269-3973
Comment:
Chancellor is a red French-American hybrid grape grown widely in the Eastern United States. We have had wines produced from it before, which are usually fruity and somehow undistinguished. Lambert's was an eye-opener for us. Two different vintages were being poured. The older one was darker and had more bite; the younger one had intentionally been made lighter and fruitier by the winemaker to suit a different taste. We bought three bottles in all, but two were from the more complex year.
We came upon Lambert's by luck. We were in West Virginia for a family wedding, we arrived early on a Friday and had some time to kill, so we figured we would try a local winery or two. We have been to the Finger Lakes and California and a few other states, so I guess we may have been guilty of a little pre-judging of what we would find. Just one more reminder of how life is about the journey.
We liked everything about Lambert's. From the hand-cut stone of the winery walls to the rocking chairs by the fireplace, this is a special place. The people knew their wine, and managed to make us feel like friends who'd just dropped in instead of customers. Best of all, we liked the wines, one after the other. We live about 500 miles away, but if you are traveling on I-79 in West Virginia this is a winery you should make sure to visit. |
