Wine of the Month - January Dolcetto Grand Street - 81 Pine Island Turnpike Warwick, New York 10990 Comment: Francesco Ciummo makes good wine. He has a zest for the winemaker's art that is unmistakable, and his philosophy as a winemaker is summed up as follows: "It's the people. If they didn't smile, I don't think I would make wine anymore." Even knowing that, this wine was a good surprise for us. We'd picked up a bottle while visiting the tasting room with a friend. A month later, we took it along to a restaurant and discovered it was far better than we remembered. Maybe it was the occasion, maybe it was the restaurant and the Veal we had with it -- at any rate, we will always have a fond memory for this bottle. Dolcetto is a grape and an Italian style wine, associated with the Piedmont in northern Italy. The wines are usually full and soft, grapey, bittersweet; it is often thought of as a Piedmontese equivalent to the French Beaujolais.
