Wine of the Month Newton Vineyard Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 Newton Vineyard 2555 Madrona Avenue
Winemaker: Stephen Carrier
Comment: This wine is made in the old world style, a tribute to the wine of Bordeaux. The vineyards here are laid out to emphasize the terroir of individual parcels. The winemaking emphasis is on the fruit and careful attention to the crafting of the wine.
Newton Vineyard is owned by Su Hua and Peter Newton. Founded in 1977 as one of the first wineries on Spring Mountain, west of St. Helena in Napa Valley. Their vision has led to a highly praised winery that works to a purist tradition in the winemaker's art.
Unfiltered wine is made with a different technique than most of the wines you find in your local store. They are run through fine filters to remove particles suspended in the wine. Unfiltered wine is not. Winemakers who filter do so to clear a certain haziness and improve the clarity of the wine. Winemakers who practice the unfiltered technique believe that subtle flavor nuances and aromas are lost as well.
The Tasting Note from the winery: Exhibiting exceptional balance, this wine opens with aromas of chocolate covered coffee bean and a touch of cassis balanced by vanilla, pepper, and mineral. The mouth-feel is sensuous, round and supple, with ripe tannins draped in velvet. Fresh black cherry fruit is captured with whispers of rose and lavender. Sumptuous to drink now, this wine will mature gracefully with time in the cellar. |
