Wine of the Month Traminette'01 2200 Routes 5 & 20 Stanley, NY 14561 585-526-6742
Comment: Back in the Summer of 2001, we were touring wineries in the Finger Lakes. At the tasting room of one, the lady behind the counter asked where our hotel was, then recommended we stop at Amberg on the way back since it was on our route. We got there just before they closed Sometimes you luck out. Hermann Amberg runs the Vineyard; Eric Amberg runs the Winery; the result is good wine. Traminette is a new grape, a hybrid descended from the Gewurtztraminer. The Ambergs were heavily involved with the Cornell experimental trials before its' release, and they obviously have a vision for the wines it will make. We've tasted it elsewhere, down in the Delaware Valley, and Pennsylvania, but this one shows the floral bouquet and spicy finish of its heritage nicely. Amberg Wine Cellars recommend it with oriental, chicken, and seafood dishes. If you check our Recipe of the Month page, you'll see I just chose it to go with Fettucine con Ricotta. Not only that, I can testify that it makes a good choice for sitting on the back deck on a lazy afternoon. All in all, a good, versatile white that won't break your piggy-bank. Recommended. |
