Wine of the Month Santa Barbara Winery 2003 Sauvignon Blanc Santa Ynez Valley
Santa
Barbara Winery
800-225-3633 Winemaker: Bruce McGuire
Comment:
This Sauvignon Blanc was aimed by the winemaker at the seafood dishes and spicy cuisine of the Pacific Rim. Aromatic and delicate, we saw it as a welcoming wine, suited to lazy days on the back deck and informal barbecues as Spring and Summer open before us.
Sauvignon Blanc is one of our favorite wines, both food-friendly and suitable for quiet sipping by itself. No one will go far wrong if they have a bottle available for surprise guests or who sets a few examples out at a large party.
Everyone seems crazy for Santa Barbara County these days in the wake of the 'Sideways" movie. Santa Barbara Winery was there long before the film crew arrived, opening in 1962, the first post-Prohibition winery to open in Santa Barbara County. Pierre Lafond, a local wine-and-cheese retailer, was the visionary who began the work. In 1981, he brought Bruce McGuire in to be his new winemaker. The pairing worked well, as the success of the winery and this Sauvignon Blanc will attest.
